The case for a Burke-size ship rests partly on carrying many VLS cells in one platform. Smaller strike systems offer useful capabilities, but do not reproduce that combination of magazine depth and weapon choices. The comparison gives Flight I a full-load displacement of about 8,400 tons and Flight III about 9,900 tons, while length rises only from 154 to 155.3 metres. Most of the extra weight therefore reflects more equipment packed into broadly similar dimensions. The missiles also need sensors and processing power to provide targeting information, adding another demand on internal space.

Magazine depth and targeting systems drive Burke size
The Burke's displacement growth reflects denser equipment and the supporting sensors needed to make a large missile magazine useful.
