Arleigh Burke learning the carrier task-force system

Arleigh Burke’s account of joining Mitscher’s staff illustrates the practical learning needed to lead a rapidly expanding carrier task force.

Notes

Burke arrived on Mitscher’s staff as a surface-warfare officer whom the aviators had not requested. He studied carrier communications, air-group routines, strike planning, and the staff’s working methods while the fast-carrier force expanded to eleven carriers and their escorts. During an air attack he finally issued the task force’s manoeuvring order, after which Mitscher told him it was about time. The leadership lesson is clear: a chief of staff must learn the system quickly, take initiative, and accept responsibility when the moment requires it.
