A proven Burke hull reaches its design limits

USS Arleigh Burke's construction dates and continuing service introduce the limits of repeatedly updating an old hull design.

Notes

USS Arleigh Burke was ordered in April 1985, laid down in December 1988, launched in September 1989, and commissioned in July 1991. At the time of the lecture, the lead ship was still serving roughly 35 years after commissioning. That endurance does not remove the limits of the original naval architecture. Internal upgrades can improve capability while retaining much of the hull's external shape and basic design. The warnings about exhausted growth capacity concern an underlying design described as nearly sixty years old.
