Enterprise and the value of long program stewardship

Enterprise's approval and construction, followed by planning for Nimitz, show how carrier procurement extended across Burke's CNO tenure and beyond.

Notes

A nuclear carrier required years of political agreement, ordering, construction, and protection from cancellation. Burke secured agreement in 1956 and an order in 1957, then remained CNO through Enterprise's 1958 keel laying and September 1960 launch. He left office in August 1961, before the ship entered service that November. His tenure also allowed consideration of the next generation to begin, and he continued to advocate for it after leaving office. Nimitz was not laid down until June 1968, nearly seven years after his departure. These different timelines explain how work begun under one service chief could influence procurement long after his term ended.
