A fatal Bulwark fire and a thousand Malta withdrawal missions

A fatal 1971 fire aboard HMS Bulwark and more than a thousand Operation Exit missions show both the hazards and the sustained workload of 845's early 1970s service.

Notes

A fire aboard HMS Bulwark in 1971 killed a marine engineering mechanic while 845 was operating from the ship. In 1972, Bulwark spent roughly eleven weeks in Grand Harbour for Operation Exit, the British withdrawal from Malta. The squadron flew a little over a thousand missions during the operation. Prince Charles served with 845 in the same period. The record places sustained logistical work beside the human cost of shipboard helicopter operations.
