Buccaneer wave damage and disputed losses

Wave damage, engine water ingestion, and an exercise-assessed loss appear in separate Buccaneer accounts, including disagreement over whether one ejection was necessary.

Question

Was a Buccaneer ever lost to a wave?

Short answer

Wave-related incidents are described, but the cause of an actual loss is disputed, and an aircraft assessed as lost during an exercise returned safely.

Notes

Several different accounts complicate the question of a Buccaneer being lost to a wave. One badly damaged aircraft returned and landed, leaving its loss attributed technically to the landing. Another crew ejected after water ingestion disabled one engine, but other crews disputed whether abandoning the aircraft was necessary while its second engine still worked. A separate recollection concerns an aircraft assessed as lost during an exercise because its pylon sensors repeatedly indicated immersion, even though it returned safely. The physical loss, its attributed cause, and an exercise assessment must therefore be kept separate.
