Invincible speed margins and battlecruiser control

A seven-knot margin over the battle line gives a battlecruiser far more tactical control than a one- or two-knot increase.

Question

How much would faster Invincible, Lion, Queen Mary, and Tiger speeds change British battlecruiser design and tactics?

Short answer

One or two extra knots would change little. A much larger margin over the battle line would let a battlecruiser force dictate range, pace, and engagement terms.

Notes

Speed can control a gunnery engagement as well as define a ship's performance. A one- or two-knot increase would sharpen the contrast with German designs, described here as closer to second-line battleships, without transforming the Invincibles' tactical role. A three- or four-knot margin would let the faster force choose range and pace. Starting the Invincibles at about 28 knots, roughly seven knots faster than the battle line, would let them dictate the engagement far more completely.
