Coins, crop marks, and Severus's Forth crossing

Coin imagery and the line of Roman camps support a debated reconstruction of a vast bridge of boats across the Forth near South Queensferry.

Notes

Simon Elliott's account uses coins of Severus and Caracalla, including an image interpreted as a bridge of boats, to investigate how the army crossed the Forth. One reconstruction places the crossing near South Queensferry and suggests a structure as long as two kilometres. An estimate of as many as 500 boats is set against the roughly 900 vessels attributed to the Classis Britannica. Other proposed crossings lie farther upstream, near Camelon, Alloa, or Stirling. Crop marks and the alignment of later marching camps provide a second kind of evidence for the proposed route into Fife. The proposed location and form remain an argued reconstruction, combining texts, objects, and landscape evidence without erasing uncertainty.
