Did Germany have enough minesweepers to clear a route for Sea Lion?
Short answerNo. It would have needed captured vessels, and the combined force would still face losses while clearing routes under British fire.
NotesGermany lacked enough minesweepers for the proposed crossing and would have had to supplement its force with captured Dutch and French vessels. Those ships still needed to clear routes while exposed to British fire. Losses during clearance would further reduce an already limited force. The problem was therefore maintaining a usable passage as well as making an initial gap in the minefields.
