Competing demands for experienced British formations

Britain's many commitments affected which formations were available for the early campaigns in Asia.

Notes

The assessment of Britain's early-war army separates its overall development from the forces allocated to individual theatres. More capable formations were concentrated in Britain and North Africa, leaving other commitments to draw on what remained available. Operations in the Middle East, Iran, and Madagascar also competed for troops. The early reverses in Burma, Malaya, and Singapore are therefore discussed alongside the unequal distribution of military experience. This argument qualifies judgments about the whole army made from the performance of one distant command.
