Competing objectives and German logistics in the Soviet Union

The argument for concentrating German offensives turns on limited supply capacity and the potential value of a Baltic port.

Notes

The argument for a more concentrated German campaign sets Moscow against the southern oil and Stalingrad axis. It treats pursuing several major directions as a demand Germany's supply system could not meet. A later second offensive would depend on moving supplies quickly enough to support it. St Petersburg mattered in this argument as a Baltic port through which shipping could supply the troops. Taking one objective therefore would not remove the need to prepare the transport system for the next.
