A proposed captain's steward in Star Trek would move between the command staff and the lower decks. That role would give a story a natural route into the lives of crew members beyond the bridge. The suggestion draws on the real steward's contacts across a ship. It concerns a possible character whose naval duties would connect those two groups.

The real steward's movement across a ship offers a plausible way to connect senior officers and ordinary crew in fiction.
