Landing on a carrier that could swing out of the wind

Harbour landing practice required pilots to watch the ship's heading as well as the batsman's signals.

Notes

Harbour landing practice aboard Implacable took place with a forty-knot wind and rain squalls around Scapa Flow. Mike Crossley warned his pilots not to land when the ship swung out of the wind. They sometimes opened the throttle and went around during the batsman's signals, provoking an angry response. Crossley accepted that he should have warned the batsman about those instructions. Safe recovery required the pilots and the officer guiding them to understand the same restrictions.
