Why do senior officers need someone to make sure they eat and sleep?
Short answerHigh-intensity operations keep senior officers on the bridge or in the combat information center, so a steward brings food and watches for neglected basic needs.
NotesA captain and executive officer can spend long periods making decisions on the bridge or in the combat information center. The captain's cabin is placed close to the bridge so that an urgent call requires little delay. Bringing food to the captain follows the same practical principle: routine needs should not pull the commanding officer far from the action. A personal steward also notices when quiet reminders to rest have failed. The steward can then approach the chief medical officer, who has the authority to order the captain to sleep.
