What could go wrong if Type 31 production is accelerated?
Short answerThe follow-on programme would need to be ready sooner, or the yard could run out of work after the faster Type 31 batch finishes.
NotesFaster Type 31 construction shortens the time available to decide on the next programme. The proposed successor is initially called Type 32, then CCV. To preserve the economics of an active production line, the next ships must be ready to take over when the current batch ends. Without that continuity, acceleration could bring forward a gap in orders and put the yard at risk of closure.
