Could a European warship use only European systems?

Corvettes and lighter frigates are contrasted with demanding air-defence ships when assessing dependence on European and American suppliers.

Question

Could European countries build a corvette or larger warship using only European systems?

Short answer

Corvettes and lighter frigates should be feasible; demanding air-defence ships are expected to need components from both sides of the Atlantic.

Notes

A corvette should be technically feasible using systems sourced entirely within Europe. The European Patrol Corvette programme is an attempt to achieve that sort of arrangement. France's reported decision against buying the vessels complicates the programme, particularly for Spain, despite continued French industrial participation. A demanding air-defence destroyer or frigate creates a greater sourcing challenge than a corvette or lighter frigate. At the higher end, important components are expected to come from both Europe and America regardless of where the ship is built. The same interdependence works in both directions, since American construction also uses European technology. For a Type 31-like light frigate, either side of the Atlantic should be able to supply a complete set of systems.
