A Dutch aircraft carrier is proposed as a way to compensate for limited aviation infrastructure in the East Indies. It would provide reconnaissance, strike aircraft and air defence while serving as a fleet command unit. Its presence would also reduce the need to devote cruiser space to aircraft facilities. The proposed ship is a somewhat enlarged, fast light fleet carrier of about 15,000 to 16,000 tons at most. Cruiser-related machinery and protection arrangements would keep the design within Dutch means. Stronger light cruisers and continuous construction of submarines and destroyers would support the force. Regular replacement would avoid relying on a sudden surge in ship numbers.
