Where ship-design expertise is trained and employed

European specialist training, overseas employment of British graduates and foreign design work for Chinese-built ships separate construction output from design capacity.

Notes

The Netherlands and Italy receive particular credit for training naval architects and marine engineers, with Germany and France also judged to have strong programmes. These specialisms underpin the favourable assessment of Europe's contribution despite China's much larger shipbuilding output. Chinese-built merchant hulls can incorporate design and development work carried out elsewhere. Britain is also credited with producing more specialists than its domestic industry alone might suggest. Many British graduates then work abroad, so a country's training output and the location of its shipyards do not describe the same pool of expertise.
