Is the Legend-based FFX really a large corvette?
Short answerThe preferred description is a patrol frigate developed from a heavily armed offshore patrol vessel. Its intended value is persistent presence on lower-threat missions that would otherwise draw destroyers away from other duties.
NotesFFX's proposed mission defines its role more closely than size alone. It is envisaged as a patrol frigate that can visit African coasts, island waters and fisheries disputes while visibly representing United States interest. An Arleigh Burke can provide much greater combat power, but using one for these duties consumes a ship needed elsewhere. The Philippine-waters example makes persistence the central issue: a destroyer with carrier escort or Taiwan Strait duties could remain only briefly. A smaller warship could keep the United States visibly involved after the destroyer leaves, with a destroyer's later arrival signalling escalation. Its deterrent value includes the political consequences of attacking an American vessel and the prospect of stronger forces responding. The proposal is also presented as a reset of the US Navy's frigate line before whatever follows.
