Diesel as a fuel label and an engine principle

Diesel fuel and compression-ignition engines are different concepts, particularly when considering the fuels used aboard ships.

Notes

Diesel can name both a fuel with a particular hydrocarbon composition and an engine design. The engine principle discussed here uses pressure to produce combustion without a spark plug for each firing event. That distinction matters when thinking about ships, because a diesel engine need not imply the same fuel sold for road vehicles. Biodiesel is described as a return to an early fuel tradition rather than an entirely new engine concept. Everyday fuel terminology can obscure these differences in machinery.
