Gibraltar's drone threat and maritime patrol coverage

Busy traffic complicates cable-controlled attacks, while continuous P-8 patrols are proposed for surveillance.

Notes

Heavy shipping traffic in the Strait of Gibraltar would endanger a long fibre-optic control cable. A boat using controlled radio communications could be harder to distinguish amid the area's existing communications, but the strait also attracts many observers. One proposal is for the UK to have enough P-8 aircraft to base some at Gibraltar and keep an aircraft continuously airborne over the area. Sustained patrol coverage would support observation of the passage.
