Why Type 45 destroyers could remain until 2040

The forecast of service into about 2040 considers ship age, time at sea and delays awaiting dockyard work.

Notes

Type 45 destroyers are expected to remain in service until roughly 2040. Their usable lives depend partly on time at sea and extended periods in harbour, including delays caused by insufficient dry docks. For Duncan, the calculation uses a 2010 launch and roughly 27 years of commissioned service by 2040. Daring, launched in 2006 and commissioned in 2009, would have completed about 31 years of service. These are service-life projections, with no confirmed retirement dates.
