Falklands air defence and submarine deterrence

Falklands defence is described as a combination of fighters, ground-based air defence and the deterrent effect of an attack submarine.

Notes

The islands' air defence is described as an integrated arrangement that includes Typhoons, CAMM missiles and radar sites. Fighter numbers alone therefore give an incomplete picture of the defences discussed here. An attack submarine is still considered desirable as a separate means of deterring an operation against the islands. Argentina's acquisition of F-16s is identified as a concern once the aircraft operate in strength. The distinction is that fighter aircraft alone cannot seize the islands. A later return to the radar network names Mount Alice, Byron Heights and Mount Kent as its three ground-based sites.
