Would more missile cruisers remove the case for a BBGN?

The proposed battleship already resembles a very large missile cruiser, while modern Burkes are more useful than recreating an older Ticonderoga flight.

Question

Would a fleet of more missile cruisers eliminate the need for the proposed guided-missile battleship?

Short answer

The proposed battleship already resembles a very large missile cruiser, while modern Burkes are more useful than recreating an older Ticonderoga flight.

Notes

Rebuilding an older Ticonderoga flight offers less value when Flight III Arleigh Burkes are available. The Ticonderoga class grew from the smaller Spruance destroyer hull and was reclassified from destroyer leader to cruiser to close a perceived Soviet cruiser gap without buying a new cruiser design. Recent American nuclear cruiser concepts and the proposed guided-missile battleship are surprisingly similar. The battleship label may therefore be a way to move a large missile combatant through a political system that has repeatedly rejected cruisers. More cruiser hulls would change fleet numbers, but they would not make the underlying large-combatant proposal conceptually different.
