One panelist credits Shattered Sword with deepening his interest in the Battle of Midway. The carrier engagement has been reconstructed in enough detail to follow decisions and timing closely. He contrasts that record with Guadalcanal night battles, where ships, crews, and positional information were lost amid the confusion of survival. The comparison shows how surviving evidence shapes what historians can know and which battles reward especially close study.

Why Midway rewards detailed reconstruction
Midway's appeal comes partly from the unusually detailed reconstruction possible for a carrier battle, especially when contrasted with confused night actions.
