Cape Matapan combines a carrier's unexpected place in the battle line with a night encounter against three Italian heavy cruisers. The carrier has to be directed away after its presence in the firing line is noticed. Later, the destroyers even consider whether one of the stricken Italian ships could be captured. These incidents make the battle a favourite among the panel's examples of naval actions with unusual turns.
