The semiconductor supply behind rapid wartime drone production

Rapid expansion of an uncrewed fleet would require access to the advanced chips that run its systems.

Notes

A plan to produce uncrewed vessels rapidly in wartime depends on semiconductor production as well as shipbuilding. The panel proposes paying TSMC or Samsung to establish advanced fabrication in Britain, citing processes of seven nanometres and smaller. Domestic access is presented as a way to gain more control over supply and enough production capacity for the required chipsets. The proposal is a suggested industrial prerequisite, rather than an announced factory programme.
