Why a quad-packed cruise missile would be severely constrained

A missile-sizing question uses ESSM and CAMM to show the tradeoff between launcher density, warhead, and range.

Question

Would a cruise missile designed for four-round VLS packing be useful?

Short answer

Probably not as a long-range strike weapon; the cell volume would sharply constrain both range and warhead.

Notes

Putting four cruise missiles into one VLS cell would constrain the range and warhead that each missile could carry. CAMM and ESSM provide the size comparison: their missile bodies, payloads, and ranges show what fits in that space. A weapon of that size can be useful for its intended task, but it would not offer the long-range strike capability normally sought from a ship-launched cruise missile.
