A trimaran supercarrier gains beam at the cost of internal volume

A very wide flight deck does not by itself make a trimaran an efficient aircraft carrier.

Question

Are trimaran supercarriers a good idea?

Short answer

Not with current technology; their width helps the flight deck, but the separated hulls work against the deep, continuous hangar and support volume a carrier needs.

Notes

A trimaran offers a broad flight deck, but a carrier also needs hangar volume deep below it, together with its power plant and other facilities. Providing that space across separate hulls is the difficulty. The imagined solution would make the ship large enough for a hangar to span the gap between them. At that extreme scale, long catapults and separate landing and takeoff paths suggest the possibility of handling aircraft as large as an SR-71. The panel treats that as a speculative illustration of size and considers the overall design beyond present technological viability.
