When firepower wins, active defence and ship size grow

A design question contrasts the consequences of armour dominance with the consequences of firepower dominance.

Question

If armour winning the armour-firepower race leads to ramming, what follows when firepower wins?

Short answer

Passive defence gives way to active defence, encouraging ships to grow so they can disable opponents first.

Notes

When passive protection can no longer defeat incoming fire, navies shift toward active defence: destroying the opponent before being destroyed. That pressure generally produces larger ships able to carry more offensive and defensive systems.
