What should Sweden have built before the First World War?
Short answerSweden's existing combination of ships, coastal artillery, mobile guns, forts, and mines was broadly sensible; more assets would also have required more supporting infrastructure.
NotesSweden already combined ships, forts, mobile coastal artillery, and minefields into a coherent defence before 1914. More vessels could add strength, but they would also require bases, support infrastructure, crews, and spending that the country might struggle to sustain. The existing system let land-based and sea-based weapons cover the same approaches. A littoral fleet therefore made sense as one part of a layered national defence rather than as an isolated collection of ships.
