Would other Federation starship classes have struggled more than Voyager to survive in the Delta Quadrant?
Short answerVoyager was near the minimum viable size. Larger Galaxy- or Nebula-class ships could offer more redundancy and crew depth, while a Galaxy's family accommodation could make prolonged isolation more bearable.
NotesAn Intrepid-class ship is judged capable but close to the minimum practical size for a prolonged unsupported voyage, with something smaller such as Defiant facing greater difficulties. Galaxy and Nebula classes would require more maintenance, yet their larger crews could absorb casualties more readily. Spare internal volume would allow damaged or unusable sections to be isolated while other spaces took over their functions. A Nebula with the additional photon-torpedo pod is also credited with eight extra launchers. Greater size and more security personnel could deter some local attackers. A Galaxy carrying crew members' families would create civilian-protection responsibilities, but their presence could improve morale and support life across generations.
