Modern six-inch naval gun compatibility

A naval-gun question explains why six-inch ship artillery differs from land guns, even when both use similar nominal calibers.

Question

Could a new 155 mm or six-inch naval gun share ammunition compatibility with land artillery?

Short answer

Full shell commonality is unlikely, but guidance packages, explosives, and some subcomponents could overlap while naval guns remain larger, faster-firing ship systems.

Notes

A ship gun includes much more than the barrel visible above deck. Its complete mount can weigh as much as a main battle tank, with ammunition carousels and handling systems extending as far as three decks into the hull. Fire-control computers and sensors add further equipment beyond the mount itself. The discussion expects a naval six-inch system to use longer guns and larger shells, with greater rate of fire and range than a comparable land system. Common guidance packages, explosives, or subcomponents could still provide economies of scale. Sharing a nominal caliber would not by itself make complete shells interchangeable.
