Port access and crew costs in nuclear merchant shipping

Civilian nuclear shipping must combine an affordable trained crew with ports willing to receive the vessel.

Notes

A larger civilian nuclear industry ashore could make reactors aboard merchant ships more viable. The commercial attraction would include reducing conventional fuel costs. That saving would have to cover the cost of a suitably qualified crew. Port acceptance would remain a separate constraint, since a ship still needs places where it can load and discharge cargo.
