Backup hand cranks do not guarantee that a full team can work them while the guns remain in action. In a turret visited during the research discussed here, the manual-training station occupied part of the route used to pass powder. Filling the space with the nominal six to eight operators would obstruct that supply, leaving room for only two or three. The guns still need loading so they can fire once trained, and reducing the operating team makes manual movement slower. This example is explicitly distinguished from the Iowa class, whose corresponding arrangement is not recalled with confidence.

Hand-training a turret can obstruct its ammunition supply
Manual backup systems must fit around the crew and ammunition routes that remain in use during a turret failure.
