Why a long-term plan must survive its author's departure

Stress-testing a written plan exposes whether other people can execute it and whether it will remain usable after its authors leave.

Notes

Red-teaming a plan means trying to break it and then identifying changes that make it harder to disrupt. The written plan must be the object of that exercise because it is what other people will implement. An explanation that exists only in its author's head cannot repair an ambiguous instruction for future staff. A plan intended to last ten or twenty years must also allow for the people who wrote it to leave their jobs. Dependence on one person's interpretation therefore creates a practical weakness in long-term planning.
