Clarke's alternative starts with the industrial functions a spaceborne HMS Unicorn would need. Asteroid mining, refining, workshops, and expanded replicator technology would let the ship turn raw material into support for its fleet. That produces a hybrid factory and warship. A large air group alone would not provide the full role envisioned here.
