Power and ship motion complicate additive manufacturing at sea

Printing replacement components aboard ship requires a stable process and enough electrical power.

Notes

Carrying a printer does not by itself make shipboard manufacture straightforward. The printing process must tolerate or compensate for ship motion. Gimballed equipment is considered as a possible response, while electrical demand imposes a separate limit. Small component manufacture therefore needs to be distinguished from the suggestion of printing a complete hull. The assessment is conditional on the process and machinery involved.
