How a smaller Zumwalt fleet raised the cost of ammunition

Reducing the Zumwalt ship order removed much of the expected market for its guided gun ammunition.

Notes

Long Range Land Attack Projectile costs are discussed in relation to the reduction of the Zumwalt programme to three ships. A much larger class would have required more initial ammunition and repeated replenishment orders. Development costs could then have been spread over more rounds. The participants recall different original ship totals and prices, including an eventual figure around $800,000 per shell. Those figures are recollections rather than a reconciled cost account. The central mechanism is the loss of volume after development had already been undertaken.
