The proposed force starts with an undamaged Eagle joining the historical carrier attack, then adds Ark Royal and Furious. French carrier Béarn could take over aircraft-ferry duties to release Furious. The estimate is a striking force roughly five or six times the historical size, although the number of hits need not rise in proportion. Once battleships had been disabled, additional aircraft could attack cruisers and other targets in the harbour. Losing much of that force would make it harder for Italy to protect supply convoys to North Africa.
