Chapter ยท 2:14:59-2:16:36

Midway's withdrawal and the losses after the carrier battle

The aftermath of Midway brought a cruiser collision, further air attacks, and a submarine attack that ended efforts to save Yorktown.

Notes

Yamamoto cancelled the occupation of Midway once the surviving American carriers made a surface advance too dangerous. The Japanese cruisers Mogami and Mikuma collided during an emergency turn after sighting the submarine Tambor. Subsequent air attacks sank Mikuma, while the badly damaged Mogami escaped. Yorktown initially remained afloat after being abandoned, allowing a salvage party to return. The submarine I-168 then torpedoed the carrier and sank the destroyer Hammann alongside her.
