How Graf Zeppelin could change British carrier construction

An operational German carrier could strengthen the case for keeping British fleet carriers on schedule and change the later demand for light fleet carriers.

Notes

British planners knew about Graf Zeppelin and monitored her progress alongside German capital ships. The German programme influenced British carrier planning and the decision to retain Argus for training or reserve use. If Graf Zeppelin had been deployable in 1939, the carrier threat would have reinforced the case for continuing British construction. The Illustrious-class ships might then avoid delays, with later fleet carriers potentially following their intended schedules. Earlier availability could reduce the urgency of the light fleet programme and favour an intermediate carrier design. Such designs existed, but the consequences for the postwar fleet remain speculative.
