Norwegian communications and changing orders at Jossingfjord

A shore telephone kept Norwegian commanders informed while orders to resist a British boarding were first issued and then withdrawn.

Notes

The mountains around Jossingfjord made the Norwegian ships' radios ineffective. Reports went ashore to a telephone, with shouting and signal lamps connecting shore personnel to the ships. This improvised system kept naval authorities informed and allowed orders to pass without much delay. An initial instruction authorised force to prevent a British boarding of Altmark. That authority was then withdrawn, leaving the local officer unable to resist despite his earlier success in holding the British off.
