A net intended for Altmark catches another German ship

A British attempt to trap Altmark instead caught a German ore carrier, whose crew scuttled her before the destroyers could secure the ship.

Notes

A British submarine laid a three-mile net intended to stop Altmark or force her outside Norwegian territorial waters. A German ore carrier became entangled instead and was initially mistaken for the tanker. Intrepid and Ivanhoe intercepted the vessel, but fire and scuttling defeated the attempted capture. Vian later criticised the failure to go alongside immediately, given the calm sea and moonlight. Around Altmark herself, destroyers and submarines limited the routes available for escape while the British waited for a political decision.
