Missile reloads depend on lifting equipment

A refit answer shows why carrying spare missiles does not create a reload capability unless the ship also retains suitable cranes and handling arrangements.

Question

Could an Alaska-class cruiser refitted with Harpoon launchers reload missiles stored in its former aircraft hangar?

Short answer

Possibly, if the aircraft-handling cranes were retained and could lift each delicate missile precisely into its launcher.

Notes

Missile weight and empty magazine volume do not determine reload capability by themselves. A reload must be lifted, controlled, and aligned carefully. The former seaplane crane therefore determines whether the proposed Alaska conversion can work. The same handling problem makes shipboard VLS reload concepts harder to execute than their diagrams suggest.
