Invasion, blockade, and the human cost of defeating Japan

A discussion of the atomic bombings compares them with American invasion plans and a British blockade strategy against Japan.

Notes

The atomic bombings are compared with two other prospective endings to the Pacific War. The American invasion plan was expected to cause mass military and civilian casualties. The British alternative would surround Japan, destroy fishing and port capacity, and impose siege conditions on an entire state. None of the options was humane, and contemporaries had little expectation of an immediate Japanese surrender.
