Brownrigg returned from retirement to convoy duty

A former director of naval ordnance organized convoy commodores, nominated himself for sea duty, and was lost when his ship disappeared with all hands.

Notes

Henry Brownrigg had served as captain of HMS Courageous and as Director of Naval Ordnance before retiring in 1939. He returned through the Home Guard and then helped organize convoy commodores, eventually nominating himself for an Atlantic sailing. His ship was lost with all hands in January 1943 while he was serving aboard as convoy commodore. Senior retirees sometimes chose the operational risks of the merchant convoys they led over protected staff work ashore.
