Brooklyn design studies reveal two fixed priorities

Alternative turret layouts keep returning to heavy 6-inch batteries and a stern devoted to aircraft, hangars, catapults, and cranes.

Notes

The preliminary studies range from five triple turrets to four quadruple mounts and an all-forward arrangement. Despite those changes, each drawing preserves extensive stern aviation facilities with catapults, a crane, and an internal hangar. That consistency reveals which requirements the designers treated as non-negotiable: heavy 6-inch firepower and long-range reconnaissance. The alternative layouts are useful because they show the Brooklyn class emerging from a mission problem rather than from a single favored silhouette.
