Chapter · 1:00-2:05

British surveillance tracks any move by Graf Spee

Radio reports, merchant ships, and observers ashore make even a night departure by Admiral Graf Spee difficult to conceal from Harwood.

Notes

Harwood receives continuous updates on Graf Spee from an American radio contact. Merchant ships in the harbor offer another way to report her movements: the fine for transmitting there is only £5, which Britain would likely repay and might supplement with a reward. Ambassador Millington-Drake, MI6 officers, and the naval attache add observers ashore. Langsdorff realizes that Harwood will learn of any move. Harwood might also have an aircraft airborne, making even a night departure difficult to hide.
