Britain could answer H-44 with volume rather than caliber

Against a German H-44 with eight 20-inch guns, Britain might prefer a super-Lion carrying sixteen faster-firing 16-inch guns.

Question

What might the Royal Navy build if Germany completed the H-44 battleship?

Short answer

It might revive an Incomparable concept, but a super-Lion with sixteen faster-firing 16-inch guns would be the more practical response.

Notes

Two British answers to the immense H-44 design are considered: revive an Incomparable-style concept or exploit gun and turret technology already closer to maturity. The favored practical route is a very large Lion derivative with four quadruple 16-inch turrets. Sixteen smaller weapons would throw far more shells than H-44's eight 20-inch guns and would probably fire faster. That volume would improve ranging and multiply the chances of early hits even if each shell were individually lighter. Mature manufacturing and greater broadside density could therefore answer a larger caliber more effectively than an equally extreme gun.
